Genshin Impact 1.6 update: Everything we know

Genshin Impact update 1.6 is launching, meaning new characters, bosses, and weapons—and this time, it there's going to be a new way of getting around, too. Those new Wavesplitter boats have all sorts of combat and time challenge activities they're a part of. There's a new for the Serenitea Pot too, and a lot of activities to take part in on the island beaches with the Midsummer Island Adventure event.

If you're keen to find out all the ins and outs of the upcoming update, here's everything we know about the Genshin Impact 1.6 update.

When is the Genshin Impact 1.6 release date?

The Genshin Impact 1.6 update will release on June 9

The update is entitled 'Midsummer Island Adventure' and introduces the 'Companion Move-In Feature' to the Serenitea Pot, as well as various fun activities, new modes of transport, and new character skins for Jean and Barbara.

The 1.6 update follows miHoYo's previous trend—1.5 released on April 28, and as updates usually run for six weeks, that brings us neatly in line with the previously predicted June 9 release date.

1.5 has an Adventure Rank requirement of 40 or higher to start the new Archon quest, so expect the Inazuma Archon quest requirement to be near or slightly higher than that. The next update will likely have several phases, with new characters and quests added throughout.

Genshin Impact 1.6 Special Program and trailer

The special program, first aired on May 28 shows off many of the activities, coming in the 1.6 update, including the new character, a new Archon Quest, and various other activities and details.

This Midsummer Island Adventure trailer shows off what appears to be new seabound activities associated with the upcoming update. You also get a good look at the new playable character, Kazuha.

Genshin Impact 1.6 banner: Who are the new characters?

The new five-star character is Genshin Impact's Kazuha, a wandering swordsman from Inazuma with Anemo as his vision. His stats, abilities, and even idle animations have already leaked from the beta. Not much is known about how Kazuha fits with the story, though it’s said he harbors dark secrets deep in his soul.

The Klee banner has been confirmed to get a rerun, which actually makes sense. Genshin 1.4 and 1.5 each featured reruns of existing five-star characters before introducing the new additions. There was some debate over which characters might be joining Kazuha 1.6's banners. Some suggested Ayaka, another five-star character, will finally make it in the game after existing in beta form for months. However, miHoYo’s recent Special Program thwarted that idea for now.

Genshin Impact 1.6 story: How will it progress?

A new Archon Quest, entitled 'Autumn Winds, Scarlet Leaves' takes us to Inazuma, with the aid of the new five-star character Kazuha. Inazuma is reportedly a more hostile region, one the Traveler has to sneak into with Beidou’s pirate crew, and leaks say the full region won’t be explorable right away.

Genshin Impact is getting boats

Boat travel was also rumored as the 1.6 update’s major new feature, and the new trailer confirms this. Genshin Impact has no qualms about adapting other genres, including hangout events and realm customization and it seems you'll be able to summon your own 'waverider' and join others in co-op mode, in true Sea of Thieves style.

I’d like to see naval battles as part of the new boat feature, something to vary the game’s too-familiar combat, but we do know there are races and other activities in which you'll be able to take part.

Genshin Impact 1.6 Serenitea Pot additions

Soon players will be able to invite companions to move into their Serenitea Pot, up to a maximum of eight. In order to unlock the feature, you'll first need to complete the 'Idle Teapot Talk' world quest.

Any companions that join you in the Serenitea Pot will gain continuous Companionship Experience. You'll be able to locate your invited companions on the minimap and interact with them. More conversations will unlock at higher Friendship Levels.

Genshin leaker @AeEntropy found full details for one new sword: Boreas Precocity, also known as the Freedom-Sworn Sword, which was confirmed on May 28. Like the Staff of Homa for Hu Tao, it’s intended as Kazuha’s ideal weapon and increases the party’s normal, charged, and plunging attack damage.

Another confirmed weapon is a nifty looking four-star bow, the Mitternacht's Waltz. There's also Dodoco Tales, a four-star catalyst.

One boss is the Maguu Kenki, a massive, sword-wielding foe that drops the Maguu Kishin needed for Kazuha’s Ascension. Mihoyo have said that Maguu Kenki can still be challenged after the event ends, but you won't be able to complete the related event quests for doing so afterwards.

The new Inazuma world boss, whatever it will be, is said to reside in an area similar to Dragonspine. Instead of the cold hampering your progress, you’ll have to contend with changing tide levels affecting which areas you can access.

Genshin Impact 1.6 events: What we know

Update 1.6 is bringing the Midsummer Island Adventure event, which is split into four different acts.

During Act 1 "Main Cannon, Make Ready... Fire!" you'll clear out the ocean of monster encampments.

For Act 2 "Whirlpool off to Starboard... Full Speed Ahead! you'll sail your new waverider boat in timed challenges to collect Wavesplitter Insignias.

In Act 3 "Samurai Sighted... To Arms!" you'll challenge the new boss Maguu Kenki.

Lastly, Act 4 "Harpastum Bombs Loaded... Blow 'Em Away!" you'll use Harpastum Bombs to defeat monsters around the beach.

The other event, Echoing Tales, asks you to collect Echoing Conches around the islands, which will let you unlock rewards like Barbara's new outfit.

Gensin Impact is coming to the Epic Games Store

Alongside the 1.6 update, Genshin Impact is getting a release on the Epic Games Store on June 9.

"When developing Genshin Impact, one of our main focuses has been to make the game available on a wide range of platforms so players can play alone or together with friends regardless of how they choose to play it," MiHoYo president Forrest Liu said. "The Epic Games Store is an expert in PC gaming, and we're privileged to work with Epic to bring Genshin Impact to a broader global gaming community."
